This is used as a dilute in the att empt to regain his manhood. While the doctor’s wife in on her sickbed, she essentials Nick to get keep going and see her but Nick decides to go off with his buzz off to do “better things” and be “masculine”. They go hunt in the forest to get away from everything and to be free.
Anything that the wife says to the doctors seems to non affect him at all for it is already too easy; he is already too damaged in life. In all the stories Nick excludes complication in his life to avoid pain and sorrow. I feel that Nick doesn’t expect to turn out like the doctor so he tries to h ide in activities like hunting. There is not! a great deal dialogue in whatsoever of Hemingway’s stories to prevent the complications that come with it, and this one is no different. In “The End of Something” Nick is face issues with his girlfriend, Marjorie. He says that the relationship is not fun anymore and that it needs to end.
